Network Mission

Network Mission

The Better Climate Governance Network is comprised of leading actors interested in improving the effectiveness of climate governance within and beyond the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Network offers a space to think creatively about the way forward for UNFCCC meetings and the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Our mission is to engage in open conversation and discussion about improving climate change governance within the UNFCCC negotiations and beyond and to explore avenues for mutual learning and capacity building needed to step up climate action.

Who is convening this Network?

The Better Climate Governance Network emerged from a research and impact project funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council on improving the effectiveness of UNFCCC negotiations. Key Investigators in that project,  Dr. Katharine Rietig (Professor in International Politics, Newcastle University, UK) and Christine Peringer, JD (Senior Advisor on Climate Change of the World Federalist Movement – Canada and Mediators Beyond Borders International) serve as the Better Climate Governance Network convenors. The Network was launched in April 2021 at the first Better Climate Governance Matters! online conference.

Who are Network Fellows?

We are a growing and diverse network of individuals from a multitude of organizations – governments, the UNFCCC and other UN organization secretariats, facilitation, mediation and environmental NGOs and other civil society organizations and academics. Fellows are united in the desire and passion to improve climate change negotiations and the global co-ordination of implementing the Paris Agreement within and linked to the UNFCCC as central forum for exchanging experiences, sharing best practices and capacity building.

What does Being a Fellow Involve?

The Network has a LinkedIn group where Fellows can share ideas and a Twitter account for sharing announcements. We also organize the annual Better Climate Governance Matters! Conference as a central forum and welcome your ideas, for example on forming working groups dedicated to specific topics or any other activities about which you have an interest.
